When Sebastian and Grace reached the edge of the parquet dance floor, the music stopped and for what seemed an eternity but was surely no more than ten seconds, a hushed silence fell over the ballroom.

The weight of more than two hundred stares and what felt like the expectations of an entire nation pressed down on Sebastian.  He could actually feel the anticipation hanging in the air.  It surrounded him like London’s ubiquitous yellow fog.  He knew what they all were waiting for.  What they all wanted.  What they all expected of him.

And now that the mourning period for his mother was officially over, there was no longer any reason not to ask Grace the question everyone expected him to ask.  No reason not to honor his beloved mother’s deathbed request--to marry Grace and forever join the Hartley and Kendall families who had been friends and neighbors for generations.  No reason to not make the betrothal announcement everyone expected--most especially his father who’d reiteration to Sebastian since he was fourteen-years-old that a match between him and Grace was counted upon.

No, there was no reason at all.

Except for the fact that he was in love with someone else.
